ACTIVITY 8.2 - How IoT Is Quietly Making My Life Easier (And a Little More Complicated)
After watching Benson Hougland’s TEDx talk, “What is the
Internet of Things? And why should you care?”, I realized how much the
Internet of Things (IoT) already impacts my life—without me even thinking about
it. Hougland explains that IoT connects everyday objects—like thermostats,
lights, and even coffee makers—to the internet, so they can collect and
exchange data. It’s wild to think about, but this connectivity allows these
devices to predict what we need and help us automate tasks. It’s made my life a
lot more convenient, even in ways I hadn't fully appreciated before.
For me, my main experience with IoT comes through my
smartwatch. It connects to my phone and tracks all kinds of health data—like my
steps, sleep, heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels. It’s helped
me stay on top of my health, and I can quickly check my stats right from my
wrist. In a way, it’s like having a personal health assistant with me all the
time, motivating me to stay active and mindful of my wellness.
Though these advancements are cool, the talk also made me
think about some of the challenges that come with IoT—especially around privacy
and security. My smartwatch collects a lot of personal data, and I’ve started
to realize just how much it knows about me. That’s made me a bit more cautious
about what information I’m sharing and how secure the devices I use are. The
more connected we become, the more we have to consider how safe our personal
data is.
Overall, the talk really helped me understand the
significance of IoT in modern life. While it’s making our lives easier and
smarter, it’s important to be mindful of the risks—especially when it comes to
protecting our personal information. Embracing IoT thoughtfully can help us get
the most out of it while staying safe and secure.
